I miss Maggie
Today I put on my favorite black Smartwool sweater. First time this fall. Can you guess what I found on it? A few strands of Maggie's fur. Some little white hairs and a few little orange ones with white tips. It nearly brought me to tears. I miss Maggie. Maggie had dignity. Amos has none.

What happened to Maggie? I don't know that I was aware.
ReplyDeleteCat hair is not only perpetual, it's ubiquitous. I found familiar cat hair on a bed in a hotel in Miami, where I had unpacked my suitcase.
Maggie was part of our lives from 4 July 1991 until 26 June 2009. Most of Maggie's last couple of years were spent sleeping quietly in Abbey's room. Eventually her heart became to old and couldn't do it's job any longer. We went as a family with Maggie to our vet and said our goodbyes. It was a sad day, but Maggie had a very good life. We'll always miss her.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how old she was when you got her, but 18 years is a good, full life for a cat. Neko, who was with us in California and Massachusetts, was 14 when pancreatic cancer got him. Yes, we always will miss them.
ReplyDeleteHeem, it wasn't clear from your story--was that a hotel room you had stayed in on a previous visit, perhaps the year before?
ReplyDeleteShaun, I know what you mean about the dignity of cats. Perhaps one day Amos will also acquire dignity, but it will be of a different sort. We dog-sat for a friend's German Shepherd/Greyhound mix last weekend (4 nights, to be exact). He's a nice, and beautiful, dog, and I like him as I like animals in general, but it was weird to have a creature following me around the house, so intensely focused on everything I was doing. When the cats watch us, they are probably every bit as interested, but they do with such apparent detachment, feigned, perhaps. The dog was so expressive-every emotion displayed in the furrowing or raising of an eyebrow, the jerk of his head, the raising of both ears, etc., while a cat sits quietly and rotates one ear 90 degrees.
Yo,
ReplyDeleteCats are more stealth. They would make better spies. Dogs are more like groupies. Little or no tact. It may also be that dogs look up to us, but sometimes I think cats look down on us.
Miami was a business trip in late 2007.
